Faking It!
Avoiding fines in Florence
Dear Newsletter Reader,

Welcome to the June issue of our newsletter.

Travelling abroad is a wonderful experience, giving you the chance to enjoy another culture and their customs.  However, it can also be a time when tourists can unwittingly or unexpectedly break local laws.  In this months newsletter, we are highlighting some things 'Not to Do' or things to be aware of to help your holiday become stress and hassle-free.

As always, please let us know your views on our newsletters or contact me for any other information or help.

Regards

Dympna

Handbags Whilst visiting the big cities such as Florence and Pisa, you will see many traders offering fake designer handbags, purses and scarves at bargain prices.
You may be surprised to know that it is an offence to BUY the items as well as sell them!  If you are seen by a police officer buying the fake goods, you will be stopped and issued with a fine of up to 1000 Euros AND you will lose the item/s that you bought!  Unfortunately, in most cases the trader is the one that gets away with it.

Speed Cameras
Automatic speed cameras are becoming a more frequent sight on all roads within Tuscany and Umbria.  The photo to the right shows the standard speed camera box but please note it can be facing you or even 'side-on' to you and it does not need to be painted a bright colour like in some other countries.  On the highways there are warning signs to say that you are approaching a speed camera.
If you do break the speed limit, you can expect a fine to arrive on your doorstep up to a year afterwards and sometimes longer if you had a hire car!
The police have 365 days from the identification of the driver to issue the fine - car hire companies and government driving licence agencies (such as the DVLA in the UK) are obliged to pass on the driver information when asked by the Italian authorities.

TZLUnfortunately there are some of our guests who already know about the Zona Traffico Limitato or ZTL areas of Florence (in particular, but they are being introduced to other cities).
These are areas where traffic is not permitted without a permit.  The signs are only in Italian and have cameras above them to record the details and take a photo of the driver and car.  You may only notice them as you drive past them or you may not notice them at all!.  As with the speeding fines, information on the drivers must be passed on to the Italian authorities and again, they have up to 365 days from the identification of the driver to issue the fine.
Ask us for information about visiting Florence by train - its often very easy and definitely saves you any worry about finding somewhere to park without entering a ZTL area.
